A little Journey..
Well… having a conventional job was never really going to be on the cards for me – because actually… I’ve never really had a conventional life! I’m starting to feel like a bona fide gypsy after a somewhat nomadic existence, currently in the UK with a job (my second job!) that involves lots of travel and also having grown up in Africa and lived in the Middle East and Australia... Constant moving and travelling hasn’t always been an easy lifestyle, but it has been an incredible gift and I probably would not be doing what I do if it weren’t for this. I feel privileged to have experienced some of the diverse cultures, traditions, landscapes, people, plants, foods and other natural wonders of this world. It has certainly helped with this winding career path of mine, keeping the explorer in me happy and allowing me to keep learning, picking up gems of wisdom as I go along.
I guess it’s been a process of natural evolution. I’ve always been in awe of nature and firmly belief that everything we need to heal lies right here in the natural world, if we only took the time to learn. Personally, I’ve been dabbling in it for the last 15 years - you'll find that most therapists begin with some degree of self-experimentation! However, in terms of formal study, it was some years back in ‘The Great Southern Land’ where it all started. Australia undoubtedly has some of the best naturopathic training programmes in the world, so I'm grateful to have such a solid foundation. It may not be the standard 9-5 job, nor is it one for financial gain, but it all comes down to the fact that I simply can't imagine doing anything else. It’s kind of become my life’s passion (bordering on obsession some may say!) and no doubt will continue on to be a lifetime of learning.
I'm still not sure exactly where I want to go with it in the future... practice, a shop, workshops, an online venture... I guess it's an organic process (pun intended!) and hopefully in time it'll grow into something I'm proud of. For now I'm still trying to find my feet... so keep posted!
Pineapple Sage and the Hummingbird ….a tiny (true) tale of inspiration
I always get asked these questions… What was my inspiration and what is the deal with Hummingbirds and ‘Pineapple Sage’?! So I thought I would finish off with this...
To cut a long story short… Once upon a time, during a particularly difficult period in my life - I had a chance encounter with a hummingbird. At the time I was a solo traveller in Asia, en-route back to England after spending the last 6 years living in Australia. It was one of those times in life when everything seemed to implode at once: life/relationship/health/finances... Total loss and overwhelm summed it up. Needless to say, my health, motivation & outlook were at an all time low.
So... back to this one particular morning, there I was sat on the balcony (nursing a sore head and feeling sorry for myself) when this vibrant multicoloured little bird appeared, gathering nectar from some of the pineapple sage plants surrounding me. I was in awe… captivated…. & suddenly in that moment it all just seemed OK because despite all of life’s struggles – it was a reminder that this world is still so wonderful. A real pivotal moment I guess, ironic how such a tiny creature really put me in my place! For me, that morning was the beginning of a new chapter. Whilst I would not wish to revisit that period in my life again, it did teach me a lot and it has made me who I am today. Difficult experiences shape you and I do believe that in the long run, they often leave you richer (in spirit) and stronger. Hard to believe at the time but so true looking back!
Anyway, fast forward a few months later & post-move to the UK... My experience with the hummingbird stayed with me. I looked into the legends & folklore and curiously found that they feature widely in ancient Native American and Asian mythology and symbolism. This is the running theme summed up:
The Hummingbird…. A sacred symbol of healing, spirituality, vitality and regeneration.
It all seemed so fitting.... So there you have it, ‘Pineapple Sage’ is a tribute to that little hummingbird and I designed the logo to signify HOPE and HEALING. Something which I’d like to pass on to you (or maybe you’re just curious and want to learn more) Either way, I hope you get something from this website. Thanks for reading and stay with me on my journey!
